Visual identity for an exhibition showcasing the research project Machine Vision in Everyday Life (check out my previous work for them here!), charting the impact of machine vision on three scales: individual, social and world. How do machines see us as individuals? Which changes do vision machines bring to society? And what kind of worlds are made possible by machine vision technologies?


The exhibition was bilingual, with information in both Norwegian and English. The text hierarchy consisted of four levels, and I developed a system for the different text types, such as headings, body text, captions, keywords about the artworks and fact boxes.

I also designed a «toolbox» of graphic elements to be used with or in addition to the typography. This was to create space for the audience to rest their eyes in-between those large blocks of text, and also to increase interest for the content by highlighting and emphasizing. The elements draw a lot of inspiration from digital interfaces such as buttons, windows, hashtags and emojis — which is in accordance with the exhibition’s theme. The elements can also be seen as a nod to the «noise» one encounters in the digital world.


The desired impression was for the exhibition to feel welcoming, but at the same time ominous.


The Machine Vision exhibition was displayed at the University Museum of Bergen from March to August 2021.Client: The University of BergenAgency: Overhaus

Design, concept and illustration of Bergen municipality’s Kunstformidlingsplan
for barn og unge 2020–2025 — a strategy to ensure that the children and youth in
Bergen have access to high quality art and cultural activities. 


The aspiration was to create an easy-to-read and engaging report, and I
therefore opt for a solution based on children and youth’s way of seeing and
experiencing art. To convey optimism and childlike joy, I have used large font
sizes and an illustration style with heavy, graphic lines, simple shapes and vibrant
colours. The illustrations are inspired by the field of art and culture, with a
simple, almost naive, expression.


By depicting art and culture from the perspective of children and youth,
I want to promote empathy, playfulness and enthusiasm for the content of the
plan. I also aim to make Bergen municipality visible as an inclusive and open
contributor, and to invite the professional art field to co-creation and growth,
in order to jointly strengthen children and youth’s art and cultural competence.Client:&#38;nbsp;Bergen kommune

Once upon a
time in Hardanger there were four guys who dreamt of 


providing 


 people with a natural
and refreshing hard seltzer. It had to be a proud product native to Hardanger,
clean in taste and honest in content. No gibberish!


Inspired by
Hardanger's magnificent and adventurous nature, we created a mysterious universe
inhabited by legendary creatures. The creatures wanders the forests and fields,
collecting the best natural ingredients—hidden in secret places. The illustration style is based on classic, scientific zoology illustrations, and add distinctiveness and elegance to the brand,
as well as humor and informality.

We chose a decorative
blackletter typeface to compliment the illustration style and substantiate the
mythical. The arc-shaped typography frames the illustration and creates a
venerable expression, with associations to older architecture. The shape is
inviting, like a door in to, or out of, another world. Tactile paper, spot varnish
and detailed edges emphasizes the good craftsmanship and quality of the product
range!

	As the Machine Vision project progressed and expanded, so did the need for profile material. I got to create stickers, totes and also a fresh new sign in brushed aluminum for the project’s headquarters.

	As an alternative to business cards, I designed postcards with machine vision technologies. They serve as memorable giveaways for exhibitions, festivals, workshops, lectures, etc.

Design, concept and illustration of Bergen kommune – en aldersvennlig kunst- og kulturby 2021–2026. This cultural strategy emphasizes the elderly's involvement and participation in an innovative and interesting cultural life, and contributes to inspire and further develop the cultural interest of a group in the population that is growing in number and diversity.


Illustrations and color palette is drawn from Henri Matisse’s painting The Dance, and was largely inspired by the strategy's first quote:


«These older dancers have always been physical people—and they still are. They have been connected to the body and the body's functionality throughout life, and can not suddenly be reduced to soft hands and gentle eyes. 	The typeface I NEVER READ is the end result of my Bachelor thesis in Visual Communication at Bergen Academy of Art and Design (Sept. 2015–Feb. 2016). The modular typeface challenges the traditional letterforms with the intention to explore how added friction and reduced legibility can increase the visual interest in a text. The over all intent is to achieve a reaction that renders reflection over the perception of type as a communicative tool.


Excerpt from the written thesis:
It is suggested that human reasoning involves two distinct processing systems: one that is quick, effortless, associative, and intuitive and another that is slow, effortful, analytic, and deliberate. System 2 processes are activated by metacognitive experiences of difficulty or disfluency during the process of reasoning. Incidental experiences of difficulty or disfluency—receiving information in a degraded font and difficult-to-read lettering—reduce the impact of heuristics and defaults in judgment (Alter, Oppenheimer, Epley, And Eyre, 2007).

When faced with typography that is less legible, the reader is forced to slow down to more sharply focus their attention and consequently improve their attention span and perception of the content before them. This again might force the reader to engage more deeply with the written material and thus enhance comprehension and encourage deeper processing.

	In order to showcase the versatility and diversity of the typeface, it was displayed in different contexts and media during a Bachelor's exhibition in Bergen, Norway. Posters, flyers, business cards and digital platforms were all a part of the exhibition, and the entire Moby Dick was redone in I NEVER READ for the occasion. The intent was to create interaction between the audience and what was exhibited. I wanted the audience—by touching, reading and picking up—to be activated and engaged in the exhibition.
